You can always count on Claris Eye Care & Surgery to stay ahead of the curve with current breakthroughs in eye care technology. iStent surgery represents one of the newest surgical therapies available to help prevent vision loss caused by high eye pressure and glaucoma.
If you have both glaucoma and cataracts, iStent is a successful, FDA-approved treatment that can significantly reduce eye pressure.
Ophthalmologist Dr. Keith Carlson at Claris Eye Care & Surgery is among the few certified Minneapolis surgeons, located in the Minnesota region, to perform this surgery using the iStent® implant.
The iStent is 20,000 times smaller than the intraocular lenses (IOL) used in previous cataract surgery. It’s being touted as “The world’s tiniest medical device” and becoming increasingly popular because it delivers BIG results!
If you have glaucoma, over time the eye’s natural drainage system becomes clogged. The iStent is designed to improve the aqueous outflow to safely lower your IOP (reduce the pressure in your eye) by increasing the eye’s ability to drain fluid.
The most common form of glaucoma is “chronic open-angle glaucoma.” This occurs when there is an imbalance between fluid being made by your eye and drained from the eye. If left untreated, damage related to glaucoma cannot be treated. The changes in your vision may be so gradual that you will not notice it until a lot of vision loss has already occurred. Actual vision loss from glaucoma occurs when the eye pressure is too high for the specific individual and damages the optic nerve.
All of this can be avoided however and glaucoma can be managed if detected early! With medical and/or surgical treatment, most people with glaucoma will not lose their sight.
Today, there is a completely new way to treat your glaucoma and you can have it done at the same time that you have cataract surgery. With the “iStent Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent” surgery, you wont have to spend the rest of your life putting one, two or even three different kinds of drops in every day. Help is on the way!
At Claris eye Care & Surgery we believe that technology has always played an important role in eye care. Currently, almost every aspect of vision is connected to a new product or procedure that wasn’t available even just five short years ago.
The mini modern miracle, called the “iStent”, works like the stents you are familiar with, those used to prevent heart attacks and strokes. For example, when blood vessels get clogged, a stent creates access to the vessel flow. Even though it’s a highly innovative technology, the iStent surgery works in a truly simple fashion:
As with anything “new” patients are often concerned with any contraindications or warnings. While extremely effective and successful with the right candidates, the iStent® is contraindicated in eyes with primary or secondary angle closure glaucoma, including neovascular glaucoma, as well as in patients with retrobulbar tumor, thyroid eye disease, Sturge-Weber Syndrome or any other type of condition that may cause elevated episcleral venous pressure.
You are in safe hands with Dr. Keith Carlson!
As the “Top Doc” and #1 eye surgeon in Minneapolis he is thrilled to be able to offer the new iStent® Trabecular Micro-Bypass Stent Surgery for the reduction of IOP in adult patients with mild-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma.
As part of a complete eye exam, Dr. Carlson and his highly trained team will look carefully into your eyes to search for signs of cataracts or glaucoma. If diagnosed with one or both of these conditions, you will receive all of the information necessary to determine whether iStent–or another medical option–will work best for you.
The future is clear to see with the help of the best pre- and post-operative care for iStent Surgery: Dr. Carlson performs all surgeries at the Minneapolis Phillips Eye Institute located next to Claris Eye Care & Surgery.
