Light Adjustable Intraocular Lenses (LAL™) for use in cataract surgery have been available for several years. In the past two years, Claris Eye Surgery has used this technology with impressive visual results. The LAL™ is manufactured by RxSight and allows an ophthalmologist and the patient to “decide” what type of vision is needed after the implant is placed in the eye. Patients will “try out” their post cataract surgery vision and make changes in their optical refraction and, hence, improve vision in the clinic setting. No other intraocular lens allows for this postoperative fine tuning.

For patients who want to be involved in their visual outcome and desire good uncorrected distance and computer range vision, this is an important option to consider. Recently, the data of Claris Eye Surgery and LASIK (CECS) was evaluated, and it was found that over 96% of patients were within 0.5 diopters of the target refraction with 100%. The national data on this rate is about 93%. 100% of CECS patients had uncorrected vision at a distance of greater than 20/25. In cataract surgery, this is a remarkable statistic.
In the right patient, an LAL™ lens can provide amazing results. It is best for patients without underlying eye diseases and those who embrace the idea of involvement in this vision process over several weeks. As it does not give excellent unaided near vision, this must be considered in selecting this type of lens.
